This is the Desolation Sound of the North Island.  There are a multitude of good anchorages and trails and wildlife and fishing and and and etc.
The Marinas in this area are unique in that they sponsor pot-luck suppers and other events designed to bring people together.  One Marina even provides their customers with a pancake breakfast as part of the moorage.
Besides searching out Pictographs and Petroglyphs in this area, there are tours of the village site at Mamalilaculla.
The sheltered waters and available campsites make this a popular area for kayaks and small boats.
