Sir Alexander MacKenzie set out to reach the west coast in 1792 reaching the Pacific Ocean at Bella Coola in 1793. The natives at Bella Coola took MacKenzie and his crew up the Dean Channel were they met some less than friendly natives. He set up camp on a smooth rock point and while there, he used a mixture of melted grease and vermilion and painted "Alex MacKenzie from Canada by land 22 July 1793"
In 1792 Captain Vancouver's crew had surveyed this same area.
As the crude paint began to disappear, someone chiselled the inscription into the rock.
